Handbags,
bags, and purses have existed since ancient time. They appeared first
in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and they were shown to be carried
by both men and women. In 14th century England the materials used and
their extravagant embellishments were considered a symbol of social
status. During this time period in England these purses were attached
to a female’s girdle.
In the 15th century men and women were also known to carry bags. When
carried by people with a high standing in society they were often embroidered
with gold. As time went by, in the next century handbags begin to be
constructed from common materials. This is also the time period when
traveling bags or luggage began to emerge.
As fashions began to change, the 18th century brought a more fashionable
purse into popularity. During this time a female would own multiple
bags in order to match different outfits in her wardrobe.
But it was not until the early 1900s that these began to be referred
to as handbags. In the 1920s they began to be made out of many materials
including metal and fabric. This decade also brought a change in fashion
for the handbag. In was no longer necessary to have a bag that matched
your outfit in order to be considered in style.
During the 1940s (because of the war) handbags began to be made out
of wood and plastic. In the present day purses, bags, and handbags are
crafted in many materials. These include fabric, leather, metal, hemp,
animal skins, wood, and plastic.
Today popular styles include the types listed below:
• Clutch – this is a small and long
bag. It is usually rectangular in shape and is used as an evening
bag. This handbag does not usually have a handle.
• Satchel –this is a large bag with a
small handle or handles that is often carried on the arm rather than
the shoulder.
• Duffle – a large bag used for travel
and/or to carry sports equipment and attire.
• Tote – a medium to large bag with two
straps.
• Messenger bag – this bag can be carried
by a man or a woman. It has a long strap that is worn across the body.
• Sling bag – this is a bag that has
a long strap. It is similar to a messenger bag, but it is smaller.
There are other styles of bags that are in use today, but they are
not as popular as the list above. Two of these styles of bags are coin
purses and security travel bags. Coin purses are small bags with a clasp
that are used to carry paper money and coins. These purses can be carried
by men or women.
The other style of bag is a security travel bag. A security bag is a
specialized bag is that is difficult for a theft to steal. It has a
steel strap sewn into the fabric of the strap.
